In late summer 2026, the traveling solar kitchen Fiumicina will make a stop at the market square in Paunsdorf. As a social platform for hospitality, community, and food justice, it will join forces with local initiatives, organizations, and residents from August 31 through September 17 to host neighborhood cooking events for children, teens, and adults. Using sunlight and local ingredients, these events create spaces for encounter, exchange, and self-organization, where ecological issues are linked to the search for solidarity-based forms of community, mutual support, and participation.

In Paunsdorf, we are partnering with Quartiersmanagement Paunsdorf, FiZ Leipzig – Familie im Zentrum e.V., Pandechaion – Herberge e.V., the youth café “die Brücke,” the open recreation center “Crazy,” Mouth Archives, and the Wohnstätte am Vorwerk.

The Program

OPENING EVENT: STRENGTHENED BY THE MULTIPLE CRISIS

UPDATE: New DATE due to stormy weather: August 29, 2026, 4:00–7:00 p.m.
Garden of the Gallery for Contemporary Art
Karl-Tauchnitz-Str. 9–11, 04107 Leipzig
Cooking Event and Discussion

Many people are now feeling the growing right-wing populist, authoritarian, and misanthropic tendencies in society and politics very tangibly in their civic engagement. The challenges are mounting, and with them often come feelings of powerlessness. How can we, as a democratic civil society, remain capable of taking action even in times of multiple crises? What strategies help us to collaborate reliably, effectively, and joyfully, even under pressure?

The artistic urban lab Common Grounds invites you to a communal meal in the GfZK garden to discuss these questions, share experiences, learn from one another, and develop new perspectives together.

The meal will be prepared using sunlight and rescued food at the Fiumicina solar kitchen, a social platform for hospitality, community, and food justice. Meals are available in exchange for a voluntary donation to benefit Tafel Leipzig e.V. The event will be guided by the organizations Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie and Konfliktpotential, who will provide content and stimulate discussion with thought-provoking questions. In a brief presentation, they will share insights and proven strategies from their work on organizational resilience.

Partners and Supporters: Konfliktpotential (Transformative Bildung und Kultur e. V.), Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie., Tafel Leipzig e.V., Konsum Leipzig eG, Backstein - Bäckerei für Zeitgenössisches Brot.

Still hungry for more? The Workshop Buffet: “Strengthened by the Crisis,” presented by Konfliktpotential and Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie at Pöge-Haus e.V., offers further exciting ideas and strategies for crisis-resilient collaboration.

YOUTH! TAKE OVER!

August 31, 2026, 3:00–5:30 p.m.
Paunsdorf Market Square
Children’s and Youth Café

Who actually owns public space?

Make way! On August 31, young people will take over the Paunsdorf Market Square.

The “Die Brücke” Children’s and Youth Café invites everyone between the ages of 8 and 27 to cook, eat, and get involved together. Free of charge.

For one afternoon, the Market Square will become a self-determined and visible space for young people. At the solar kitchen, young people will chop, cook, and taste-test—all for young people! What ends up on our plates and how we share the space together will be decided collectively.

Come by, bring your friends, and claim your spot!

GROWING RESISTANCE

September 6, 2026, 1:00 p.m.
Paunsdorf Marketplace
Community lunch featuring the Adretta potato

What can a potato tell us about history? Together, we’ll cook and eat Adretta potatoes with quark and discover the history and stories behind this special potato variety. Developed in 1975 in the GDR to alleviate a potato supply shortage, the Adretta gradually fell into obscurity after 1990 as the economic system changed. Today, it’s no longer so easy to find.

In her work, artist Åsa Sonjasdotter explores the Adretta potato as a living archive. The curatorial collective Mouth Archives invites you to a communal lunch to trace these rediscovered memories and share your own.

If you’d like, please bring a personal memento to the event: a photo, an object, a potato recipe, or a story about vegetable gardens, communal cooking, or preserving and passing on traditions.

Partners and Supporters: Mouth Archives, Norika Kartoffelzucht GmbH

BEYOND THE PLATE

September 8, 2026, 3:00–7:30 p.m.,
Paunsdorf Market Square
Neighborhood Cooking Event

Sharing stories, listening, and learning from one another: The international cooking groups “Thinking Outside the Box” and “Cook and Talk,” organized by the Paunsdorf Coordination Office for Migration and Integration, FiZ Leipzig – Familie im Zentrum e.V., and The Salvation Army, invite you to join them for a cooking event.

We’re especially excited that Mispah has chosen a recipe from Cameroon and will be guiding us through the preparation. Step by step, she’ll show us how to make Cameroonian-style fried rice with and without chicken.

Starting at 3:00 p.m., we’ll chop and cook together using produce from the vegetable box provided by the solidarity gardening project “Kleine Beete e.V.” Anyone who’s interested can join in or come by at 5:00 p.m. for the group tasting.

Partners and Supporters: Paunsdorf Coordination Office for Migration/Integration (Padechaion Herberge e.V.), FiZ Leipzig – Familie im Zentrum e.V., Heilsarmee, Kleine Beete e.V. - Solidarisches Gartenprojekt Sehlis

The traveling solar kitchen Fiumicina was created in collaboration with @lungomare_bozen_bolzano and most recently made a guest appearance at the Weltacker organized by @feld:schafft at @klimakultur.tirol. With additional stops—including at @mkghamburg—it forges connections between initiatives and invites people to discuss issues surrounding social and ecological resilience and justice in public spaces.

Fiumicina—A Traveling Solar Kitchen Comes to Paunsdorf is a project by UmRäumen e.V. and is conceptually and artistically curated by Mascha Fehse and Johanna Ralser in collaboration with Julia Kurz. It is part of the artistic urban laboratory Common Grounds, initiated by Stadtkuratorin Leipzig, the program for art in public spaces commissioned by the City of Leipzig’s Department of Culture. The project is funded by the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony.

The implementation of the program in Paunsdorf is made possible by its many partners: East City District Budget, Paunsdorf Neighborhood Management, FiZ Leipzig – Familie im Zentrum e.V., Pandechaion – Herberge e.V. / Paunsdorf Migration and Integration Coordination Office, "Die Brücke“ Children’s and Youth Café, "Crazy“ Open Recreation Center, Mouth Archives, Wohnstätte am Vorwerk, Konfliktpotential (Transformative Education and Culture e. V.), Konzeptwerk Neue Ökonomie, Tafel Leipzig e.V., Konsum Leipzig eG, Backstein – Bacery for Contemp Bread, Norika Kartoffelzucht GmbH, Heilsarmee, Kleine Beete e.V. – Sehlis Solidarity Garden Project, and the Poege-Haus e.V.

The developers of the Fiumicina solar kitchen are Johanna Dehio, Mascha Fehse, and Johanna Padge, in collaboration with the cultural platform Lungomare (Bolzano), 2024.

Considerations on art and public space

Art in public space encompasses a wide range of artistic expressions found in urban environments and publicly accessible buildings. This includes not only sculptures, monuments, installations, and architectural art, but also temporary performances and actions, interventions, street art, as well as sound and media art.

From Talk to Action – Complicity in Art in Public Space

Forms of collective action are constantly being re-examined. Gesa Ziemer proposes the term “complicity” to describe the spark that ignites talk into action. Complicity means developing and implementing ideas together – temporarily, affectively, individually, and deliberately.
